Flyfishing During High Water
Runoff season in the Rockies, that long stretch in May and June when the winter's snowpack transforms itself into torrents of cold and muddy water, can send flyfishers into a couple of months of depression. Many anglers write off runoff season entirely, choosing instead to spend those "dirty water weeks" swinging golf clubs or pushing lawnmowers. But it doesn't have to be so.

Gunnison County Colorado Ranches
Gunnison County encompasses the headwaters of the Gunnison River in western Colorado, and ranges from sagebrush to alpine peaks that tower over 14,000 feet. The area is known for clean air, expansive views and remarkably cold winters. In between these extremes lie the broad irrigated valleys of the Gunnison River, East River and Tomichi Creek, all of which have been occupied by productive cattle ranches for over 120 years. Most ranches lie wholly in the fertile streambottoms, but some extend into neighboring sagebrush hills and aspen forest.

Improving Your Short Game
Flyfishing, like golf, has a both a long game and a short game. While nearly everyone likes to uncork a 70-foot cast from time to time, doing so all the time won't catch many fish. Even Tiger Woods wouldn't win many tournaments if he were always using his driver.

Rio Blanco County Colorado Ranches
Rio Blanco County is named for its primary river, the White, which bisects this county from the Flat Tops Wilderness area to the Utah border. The county is full of diversity, with the western portion dominated by arid juniper canyons and sagebrush hills, which the eastern portion stretches to the high plateau of the Flat Tops Wilderness Area and contains extensive stands of aspen, spruce and fir.

Ranch Locales by County
Routt County Colorado Ranches
Routt County is dominated by broad valleys flanked by ranges of moderately high mountains. Well-watered by heavy winter snows, this may be the "greenest" region of the state. Beginning in the 1880s, this region became home to many large acreage cattle ranches, and agriculture remains economically important. Much of the arable land below 8000 feet is private, with abundant National Forest land filled with large stands of aspen and spruce/fir forests in the higher elevations.

Use a Thermometer to Improve Your Spring Fishing Success
Spring flyfishing in the Rocky Mountain states can either be a delight or a debacle. To up your odds of your next spring fishing trip being in the "delight" category, consider adjusting your strategy and tactics to match the particular environmental factors that make spring fishing a very different animal than fishing in any other season of the year.
