Fishing

On the ranch, the mile of 10- to 12-foot wide Troublesome Crk supports a robust population of fat brown trout. Partially willow lined, the creek features several rock structures; more could be added. Fishers lure 12- to 16-inch trout along with a few lunkers. Considering the cold-water flows and the stream’s large stonefly, caddis, and mayfly population, additional rock placement could have further dramatic effect. There are also four ponds on the ranch. Matheson Reservoir has produced record-breaking brook trout. It is upstream on public land.

Hunting

Big game thrives on the ranch and nearby public lands. The second section of the ranch is referred to as the “Antelope Creek section.” It is on the west side and includes 1120 acres, mostly surrounded by public land. This area includes three ponds and is under conservation easement that allows for a building envelope. It is prime habitat for elk, mule deer, and moose.

History – Matheson Cattle Ranches for Sale

In the 1880s, a family homesteaded the Matheson Ranch in Colorado Territory. Succeeding generations continued working the land for over a century. The ranch is about an hour from alpine skiing. Steamboat Springs Ski Resort is an hour west and Winter Park an hour east of the property. Wolford Mountain Reservoir is a great place for fishing and Arapaho National Forest is loaded with hiking and horseback riding trails.
