Weminuche Creek flows from Colorado’s largest wilderness area and creates a marvelous trout fishery on the 760 acres of the Hidden Lake Ranch, 23 miles from Pagosa Springs. Set in the scenic foothills of the San Juans at about 9000 feet, Hidden Lake Ranch contains about three miles of improved stream that is favored by brown and rainbow trout that grow in excess of 20 inches. Fly fishing on the creek is a prime draw here, but six ponds up to eight acres in size have proven to produce trophy trout up to 14 pounds! In addition, the ranch sits in the heart of prime mule deer and elk country, and includes direct access to the adjacent San Juan National Forest. Improvements on the ranch owe their existence to its long term operation as an elk hunting ranch, and it has a remodeled lodge and several rustic guest cabins. Beyond hunting and fishing, mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding, and wildlife photography loom large in the spacious public lands in the area. Some “recreational ranches” are such in name only, but the lovely Hidden Lake Ranch is the real thing!
